About Me

profilepicI am a Senior Lecturer in Interaction Design at the School of Design Innovation – Te Kura Hoahoa, Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington.

My research themes span the areas of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Design and Ubiquitous Computing with a particular focus on understanding people’s interactions with technology in the real world; evaluating technologies in laboratory settings and in the real world; designing interventions and technologies that are sensitive to, and reflective of, the values, practices and experiences of end users and stakeholders.

My research is positioned in the broader space of sustainability and HCI, considering the role of technology in a range of application areas such as food, energy consumption, biodiversity, collaborative economy, but also extending to less traditional discourses of sustainability that  include how to best design for preserving our communities, and for supporting them in becoming more resilient. In this context, I conduct research in areas such as mental health and wellbeing, civic engagement and community resilience with a view to how local communities, vulnerable populations can be supported by the design of digital technologies and services.

Prior to my current role, I was a Lecturer in Human Computer Interaction (HCI) at the Computational Media Innovation Center (CMIC) and a member of the HCI Research Group within the School of Engineering and Computer Science.  From February 2015 to February 2020, I was a Lecturer in HCI at the School of Applied Psychology in University College Cork and a member of the People and Technology Research Group. I was a co-Investigator at the H2020 project Grassroots Wavelengths (https://grassrootsradio.eu/) and a country representative for the COST Action From Sharing to Caring (http://sharingandcaring.eu/). From 2011-2015, I was a Research Fellow in the Mixed Reality Lab in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Nottingham. Prior to joining the Mixed Reality Lab I was part of the Pervasive Interaction Lab at The Open University, where I did my PhD under the supervision of Prof. Yvonne Rogers and Prof. Hugh Robinson.

My PhD thesis investigated the role of technology in learning environments and developed a framework that considers how technology shapes and is shaped by the socio-spatial context. In general, I regard technology as an innate part of socio-economical and architectural infrastructure and this is reflected in my most recent research that considers the role of technology as infrastructure for sustainability in various application areas such as energy consumption, biodiversity, alternative/local currencies.
